Chapter Nine

The camper was dark when Wren woke; she opened one eye to peer at her phone. Five o’clock. I don’t want to wake Rascal or Babette. She yawned and rolled onto her side but couldn’t stop thinking about what the men had said. Whoever she is, she checked the brother’s place herself. I need to check with Armand.

Wren sent a text to Armand. “Circling hammerheads. Text me when you have time.”

Armand responded immediately. “Is all okay?”

I hope I didn’t wake him. “We’re fine. Can I call you?”

Wren put her phone on silent and closed the bedroom door as her phone flashed.

“What’s up?” Armand asked when she answered.

Wren pulled the bed covers over her head and whispered, “Two men were outside of my trailer at three o’clock this morning. From what I heard, a woman sent them to the campground to look for Babette. One man said the woman had already checked with you, and Babette was not at your house. Who could that be?”

“Nobody’s asked me about Babette; I’ll check with my wife later, but she would have told me if anyone was asking about my sister. Is Babette okay?”

“She’s fine; she took a shower last night, and I picked up her clothes for her from the office.”

“You did? Wren, take them back. Have her wrap up in a blanket or something, but her clothes can’t be missing from the office. Do it now; call me back, so we can talk.”

After they hung up, Wren opened the bedroom door and exhaled in relief because the light was on over the stove.

“Good morning, Babette. I talked to Armand, and he told me I have to take your clothes back to the office. Wrap up in a blanket, and I’ll take your dirty clothes with me and drop them off at the washer.”

“That’s crazy, but we’ll find out why later, won’t we?”

Babette grabbed the blanket from the bed and the sack from the counter and rushed to the bathroom.

“Here you are,” Babette said. “The keys are on the counter.”

Wren grabbed the laundry detergent and hurried out with Rascal on her heels. She grabbed both sacks of still-wet, stinky clothes out of the truck bed and rushed to the office. Wren unlocked the door, then used the light on her phone to unlock the storage room.

After she replaced the sack on the shelf where she had found it, Wren locked the storage room then the office, and hurried to the laundry room. When they went inside, she tossed the clothes into the washer; while she put in the coins, she said, “Have you noticed our latest hobby is hanging out in the laundry room, Rascal?”

She waited until the washer started before she rushed back to the fifth wheel with the detergent bottle. When Wren and Rascal went into the trailer, she inhaled the welcome aroma of coffee.

Babette poured two cups of coffee and smiled. “It was the least I could do since my brother has obviously lost his mind. No one knows about my spare clothes except family.
